Pre debut

SPEED es un grupo vocal/dance japonés compuesto por cuatro integrantes: Hiroko Shimabukuro, Eriko Imai, Takako Uehara y Hitoe Arakaki. En un principio el grupo consistía de siete a nueve miembros rotativos. Pero fue recortado a cuatro cuando el show Yoru mo Hippare (La noche de los Hit Parare) de la Nippon Television les solicitó asistir a Tokio para presentarse en diciembre de 1995.

Las cuatro integrantes fueron alumnas de la Okinawa Actors School, donde estudiaron populares artistas como Namie Amuro, Da pump y MAX.

1996: Debut

Lanzaron su primer single el 5 de agosto de 1996 y se convirtieron en un éxito inmediatamente. Su video fue filmado en San Francisco y Los Angeles, y el sencillo vendió un impresionante total de más de 638.000 copias.

Body & Soul fue seguida rápidamente el single "Steady", que fue su primer single que superó el millón de copias vendidas (1,27 millones de copias). La canción "Steady" fue utilizada como banda sonora del dorama Itazura na Kiss.

1997

En 1997 lanzaron "Go! Go! Heaven". El video de la canción fue filmado en Nueva York y Miami. La canción vendió más de 665.000 copias y se convirtió en el primer single del grupo que llegó al N° 1 en las listas semanales de Oricon de Japón.

Después de "Go Go Heaven", SPEED lanzó en mayo su álbum debut, "Starting Over". El álbum contenía una mezcla de canciones alegres mezclados con baladas suaves. Este ábum fue N º 1 en las listas de Oricon.

En agosto continuaron con el single "Wake Me Up". El video de la canción fue filmado en las Filipinas y vendió inicialmente 671.000 copias (llegando a las 890 000 copias).

Durante este tiempo que la SPEED realizó su Concierto Debut. Este concierto fue titulado 'Speed ​​- First Live' realizado al aire libre en Odaiba.

2000-2007

El grupo se disolvió el 31 de marzo de 2000 para continuar con sus carreras en solitario y para estudiar.

Después de su separación, SPEED se reunió en varias ocasiones por caridad, como en 2001 y 2003.

2008

El 20 de agosto 2008 se anunció oficialmente que se reunirían de forma permanente. El 12 de noviembre del mismo año lanzaron su single "Ashita no Sora".

2012: Disolución

El grupo se disolvió de nuevo en 2012 después de Arakaki Hitoe no renovó su contrato.
