Background and development
After the success of the television adaptation of Ang Probinsyano, Batang Quiapo was pegged by various news outlets as Martin's likeliest next project and a possible new TV series. Rumors of the possible TV adaptation of Batang Quiapo began when the film's theme, Doon Lang, was performed by Martin in a "duet" with Fernando Poe Jr. as the clip of the scene from the film was being played; said scene originally featured Poe and Maricel Soriano singing in a duet. Martin had expressed interest in adapting more of FPJ's works for film and/or television, as he adapted another Poe classic Carlo J. Caparas' Ang Panday which was an entry into the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival.
However, the adaptation became uncertain due to Ang Probinsyano's continued extension until its finale on August 12, 2022.
On December 5, 2022, Martin is confirmed to star, direct, write, and to co-produce (the first in his showbiz career) in the Batang Quiapo remake alongside Poe's daughter, Lovi Poe and Charo Santos.
Principal photography commenced on January 9, 2023, the same day of the celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

Rave reviews from netizens
The pilot week of FPJ's Batang Quiapo indeed immediately won the hearts of viewers. It earned more than 44M digital views on its pilot week. A live viewing party was also held at Plaza Miranda in Quiapo during the pilot airing.
Batang Quiapo Day: Trending
Aside from that, the official hashtag “#FPJsBatangQuiapoDay” also became the number one trending topic on Twitter nationwide, along with topics related to it, such as “Coco Martin”, “PRIMETIME KING IS BACK”, “Miles Ocampo”, “Miles”, “Plaza Miranda”, “Tanggol”, and “Ramon”.
The netizens gushed over how great its cinematography, sound scoring, color grading, and the mounting of scenes are, which are comparable to what we see in films.
More than the technical side, the natural acting of the cast also astounded the viewers. Coco amazed us with his versatility as an antagonist and protagonist as he took on the roles of the younger Ramon and Tanggol. He was able to show off his flair in action through the nail-biting gunfight, high-speed chase, and intense fisticuffs.
The actors featured in the first episode for the throwback story were also lauded for their compelling, natural performances, especially Miles Ocampo and Lara Quigaman, who really stole the spotlight.
Of course, the acting of the veteran actors, such as Charo Santos, Christopher de Leon, Tommy Abuel, Pen Medina, Susan Africa, Cherry Pie Picache, and John Estrada are truly commendable. Similarly, the younger seasoned thespians also astonished us with their respective portrayals. Leading lady Lovi Poe’s performance as Mokang is really impressive and her chemistry with Coco is already palpable.
Meanwhile, the newbies, which were mostly vloggers and rappers, also impressed us with their performances.
True to its title, FPJ's Batang Quiapo authentically showcases the way of life in one of the busiest parts of Manila City. Filming it there is truly a challenge, yet they're able to still astoundingly pull it off.
Miles Ocampo overwhelmed by raves for her 'Batang Quiapo' performance
Actress Miles Ocampo feels overwhelmed after her widely praised performance in the pilot episode of ABS-CBN's newest series "FPJ's Batang Quiapo." In her social media post on Wednesday night, Ocampo uploaded photos of her on the set of the new action-drama series. In the caption, the actress thanked the show's lead actor and director Coco Martin and Dreamscape Entertainment head Deo Endrinal. Miles Ocampo ranked among the worldwide trends on Twitter Monday night, as the actress moved viewers with her scenes as a conflicted young mother in the pilot episode of "FPJ's Batang Quiapo."
In the primetime debut of the ABS-CBN program, Ocampo portrayed the young Marites (later played by Cherry Pie Picache), who is sexually assaulted by the fugitive Ramon (Coco Martin). The rape results in Marites becoming pregnant, and her relationship with Rigor (Ejay Falcon) turning cold. She contemplates abortion, but is stopped by her mother Tindeng (Lara Quigaman) from pushing through with the plan. At the wet market, where she sells fish, Marites goes into labor and gives birth without any help. Initially she leaves the child — to her a reminder of the traumatic event involving Ramon.
As Ocampo's emotional scenes aired on Monday, her name became a top trending topic on Twitter in the Philippines, alongside the official hashtag of the pilot episode and Martin. By the end of the telecast, "Miles Ocampo" also reached the worldwide list. Viewers praised Ocampo for her affecting performance, first as a victim of rape, then as an expectant mother about to abort her pregnancy, and later as a woman who embraces motherhood.

Coco Martin, Lovi Poe, and Charo Santos-Concio are set to star in an ABS-CBN adaptation of the 1986 film “Batang Quiapo,” in commemoration of the 18th death anniversary of film icon Fernando Poe, Jr. (FPJ), the company announced on Monday.
Titled “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,” the modern retelling of the story will be produced by Dreamscape Entertainment, the same ABS-CBN production unit behind “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,” and Martin’s own CCM Film Productions.
Martin will co-direct with Malu Sevilla, also his collaborator in “Ang Probinsyano,” the ABS-CBN primetime series which became ingrained in Philippine pop culture over its seven-year run. Like the upcoming program, “Ang Probinsyano” was adapted from an FPJ movie of the same title.
Poe, FPJ’s daughter, will be paired for the first time with Martin in the “Batang Quiapo” remake. The two are confirmed to portray love interests.
Santos-Concio, who had a guest-starring stint in “Ang Probinsyano,” will reunite with Martin in another action-packed project. This time, the screen veteran will portray the lead actor’s grandmother.
An action-comedy film, the original “Batang Quiapo” centered on Baldo (FPJ), a former pickpocket who becomes reformed after his time behind bars. Returning to Quiapo, he is asked by a young pickpocket, Maria (Maricel Soriano), to teach her his ways, but instead he attempts to put her on the right path.
Following the success of the television adaptation of Ang Probinsyano, Batang Quiapo has been pegged by various news outlets as the likeliest next project by series lead Coco Martin and a possible replacement series for the former. The rumors of the possible adaptation of Batang Quiapo as a TV series began when the film's theme, Doon Lang, was performed by Martin in a "duet" with Fernando Poe Jr. as the clip of the scene from the film was being played; said scene originally featured Poe and Maricel Soriano singing in a duet.
Martin has himself expressed interest in adapting more of Fernando Poe Jr.'s works for film and/or television, as he had also previously adapted another Poe classic Carlo J. Caparas' Ang Panday which was an entry into the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival. In addition to the interest Martin has in adapting the series for the small screen, several names had been linked to the planned remake as a potential leading lady, such as Liza Soberano and Martin's rumored girlfriend, Julia Montes. Rumors of its supposed impending adaptation further intensified when Martin met with Manila Mayor Isko Moreno. The meeting though did not have anything to do with the adaptation of the film but was made to negotiate Moreno's cameo appearance in Martin's 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival entry, 3pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon!
However, with Ang Probinsyano's unprecedented run, the show having been extended multiple times. the film's adaptation remains in limbo.
On December 5, 2022, Coco Martin is confirmed to star, direct, write, and to co-produce in the Batang Quiapo remake alongside Poe's daughter, Lovi Poe and Charo Santos.
The Feast of the Black Nazarene is annually observed on January 9. It celebrates the transfer of the Black Nazarene, an image of a kneeling Jesus Christ carrying a cross, through a procession called Traslacion. It is the third time that the Traslacion has not been held this year due to the pandemic.
Reception
Batang Quiapo was a success upon its debut. The pilot week has generated over 44 million digital views across all online platforms and peaked with 341,509 live concurrent viewers on YouTube. The official tag also became the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter nationwide.
Ratings
According to Kantar Media, the pilot episode debuted to a rating of 21.4%, and rose to 22.6% on February 15 (beating its rival Maria Clara at Ibarra with 19.1% and 19.6%, respectively).
Despite limited reach on free-to-air, AGB Nielsen Philippines reported that the pilot week of the series gave a positive feedback on the viewers with 12.5% pilot episode rating on February 13, 2023, placing it in the 3rd spot of the rating board and 13.8% rating on February 15, placing on the 2nd spot of the rating board (compared to Maria Clara at Ibarra's 12.5%).
Muslim stereotype controversy
A day after its debut, the series' creators apologized to the Muslim community due to a scene where Martin's character Tanggol sought the help of his Muslim friend Abdul–portrayed by Rez Cortez–as he was being pursued by the police. Tanggol took refuge in the company of armed Muslim men whom the police were hesitant to take action due to fear of retribution. A number of Muslim Filipinos took offense and criticised the portrayal as reinforcing negative stereotypes against them, with some calling for a boycott of the series. MTRCB later released a statement on the said controversy. Senator Robin Padilla–a prominent Filipino Muslim–also issued a statement regarding the episode, assuring people that Martin did not have any "ill intentions" and appealed to fellow Filipino Muslims for understanding and forgiveness.
