This officially marks her for future torment by the F4 and the rest of the student body. However, unlike most of the F4's targets, Tsukushi retaliates by directly attacking Tsukasa. This unexpected retaliation and steadfast resistance to the hazing is one that he has never encountered from a target before, and falls in love with Tsukasa. Background and development[]
The production of Boys Over Flowers: The Fantastic Four was heavily inspired by F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers, which itself was an adaptation of the Hana Yori Dango manga by Yoko Kamio. As a fresh take on the Boys Over Flowers franchise, the series aimed to modernize the classic storyline while incorporating unique elements that would appeal to both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers. The idea for the series originated when Peacock and Kapamilya Channel executives noticed the continued success of F4 Thailand and its international fanbase. With the resurgence of interest in the F4 universe, the team saw an opportunity to create a localized adaptation that would resonate with audiences in the United States and the Philippines while still maintaining the essence of the original story.
Early development discussions revolved around how to differentiate Boys Over Flowers: The Fantastic Four from previous adaptations, particularly F4 Thailand, Meteor Garden, and Boys Over Flowers (Korean Version). The creators wanted to introduce a more independent and resilient female lead who would stand against the elite world of F4 while also exploring the deeper emotional struggles of the male leads. A key decision was to set the story in Atlanta International School, a fictional elite institution inspired by international private schools that cater to the wealthy and powerful. This setting allowed for the inclusion of a diverse cast and storylines that reflect social hierarchy, privilege, and the struggle for self-worth. The series sought to emphasize how money and influence shape the lives of its characters, making the drama more relatable and relevant to modern audiences.
The casting process was extensive, as the producers wanted actors who could embody the charisma and complexity of F4 while also bringing fresh interpretations to their characters. Charles Kingsley (the series’ Domyouji counterpart) was cast with an actor known for his strong on-screen presence and ability to portray both arrogance and vulnerability. Grayson Pierce (the series' Hanazawa Rui equivalent) was given to an actor with a softer, more introspective demeanor to contrast with Charles’ fiery personality. Sophia Asuncion, the female protagonist, was envisioned as a strong-willed, working-class student who refuses to be intimidated by F4. The writers worked hard to balance her tenacity with emotional depth, ensuring she wasn’t just a rebellious heroine, but someone who grows and learns from her experiences. Her struggles with balancing school, part-time jobs, and a complicated love life added a new layer to the familiar storyline. One of the biggest challenges in development was updating the traditional bullying storyline. While previous adaptations often depicted outright physical and emotional torment, Boys Over Flowers: The Fantastic Four sought to explore a more psychological and social type of bullying—using influence, social media, and public humiliation rather than just direct aggression. This shift was made to reflect modern high school culture, where bullying can be just as damaging without physical violence.
To further differentiate the series, the secondary members of F4 (Kade and Ashton) were given expanded backstories. Instead of being purely supporting characters, they had their own struggles, aspirations, and romantic arcs that made them more integral to the plot.
The Peacock version (48 episodes) was developed to provide a more in-depth exploration of the characters' backgrounds, motivations, and growth. This version allowed for more romantic development, including past relationships, family conflicts, and deeper interactions between Sophia and F4. Meanwhile, the Kapamilya Channel version (30 episodes) was designed as a faster-paced, more condensed version of the story. This version eliminated certain subplots but retained the core love triangle between Sophia, Charles, and Grayson while keeping the story focused on key emotional moments.
A significant portion of the production budget was allocated to cinematography and set design, ensuring that the series visually captured the luxurious world of F4 while contrasting it with Sophia’s simpler, down-to-earth lifestyle. Lavish parties, high-end cars, and elite fashion choices were used to highlight the stark divide between the wealthy and the working class. Filming took place in various locations in the United States and the Philippines, with Atlanta serving as the primary setting for the Peacock version and Metro Manila for the Kapamilya Channel version. These locations added authenticity to the series, grounding the story in real-world luxury and exclusivity.
The music and soundtrack played a crucial role in setting the emotional tone of the series. Inspired by the success of F4 Thailand’s soundtrack, the production team worked with renowned composers and artists to create original songs that complemented the romantic and dramatic themes of the show. To build anticipation, teasers and trailers were released months before the premiere, showcasing intense confrontations, heart-fluttering romance, and moments of raw emotion. The marketing strategy leveraged social media, fan interactions, and behind-the-scenes content to engage audiences worldwide. The series’ premiere received significant attention, especially among fans of the F4 franchise. Many were curious to see how Boys Over Flowers: The Fantastic Four would compare to its predecessors and whether it would offer a fresh take on the beloved story. Upon release, the series dominated streaming charts on Peacock, while the Kapamilya Channel version gained high viewership ratings in the Philippines, proving that the Boys Over Flowers phenomenon was far from over.
Critical reception[]
The Peacock version (48 episodes) and Kapamilya Channel version (30 episodes) of Boys Over Flowers: The Fantastic Four received mixed to positive reviews, with critics praising the modernized storytelling, strong performances, and character development, while also noting some controversial choices in the adaptation. One of the most lauded aspects was the chemistry between Sophia and Charles, with many fans invested in their tumultuous romance. The slow-burn progression of Charles' feelings for Sophia was particularly praised for its emotional depth and realistic portrayal of character growth.
Critics also highlighted the improved character arcs for Kade and Ashton, who were often sidelined in previous adaptations. Their expanded storylines gave them more individuality, making them fan favorites among viewers. However, some critics found Charles’ initial bullying of Sophia too intense, even for a modern adaptation. While the series attempted to tone down physical bullying, certain psychological manipulations and public humiliations were still seen as problematic by some audiences.
The Peacock version received praise for its detailed storytelling, but some viewers felt that 48 episodes made the pacing drag at certain points. On the other hand, the Kapamilya Channel version, while more concise, was criticized for rushing major emotional moments and cutting out key subplots. Another point of discussion was the portrayal of privilege and power dynamics. While the series attempted to show growth and redemption, some viewers felt that F4’s transformation wasn’t fully justified, especially in how quickly Charles' behavior changed.
Despite the criticisms, Boys Over Flowers: The Fantastic Four gained a loyal fanbase, particularly among younger audiences and longtime F4 fans. Social media was flooded with discussions, fan theories, and appreciation posts about the characters and their relationships. Ultimately, the series reinforced the enduring popularity of the Boys Over Flowers story, proving that with the right balance of nostalgia and modernization, F4’s legacy continues to thrive in new forms.

The premiere episode of Boys Over Flowers: The Fantastic Four introduces us to Sophia Asuncion, a strong-willed and hardworking girl who is about to enter Atlanta International School (AIS) on a scholarship. Unlike most of the students at this elite institution, Sophia comes from a modest background. She balances her studies with a part-time job, taking on responsibilities far beyond what a typical teenager should bear. From the moment she steps into the luxurious campus, she feels out of place, surrounded by designer clothes, flashy sports cars, and entitled students who thrive on status and wealth. It isn’t long before she encounters the most infamous group in AIS—F4, short for "Fantastic Four," a quartet of handsome, wealthy, and powerful seniors who dominate the school through sheer influence. The group consists of Charles Kingsley, the arrogant and hot-headed leader; Grayson Pierce, the quiet and mysterious one; Kade Lockwood, the flirtatious playboy; and Ashton Vance, the laid-back yet cunning observer. Their presence commands respect and fear, as they are known for issuing Red Cards—humiliating public punishments for anyone who dares to challenge them. Sophia’s first encounter with Charles is nothing short of disastrous. She accidentally spills coffee on his custom-tailored suit, leading to an immediate standoff. Charles, used to being feared, expects her to grovel for forgiveness, but to his shock, Sophia refuses to be intimidated. She stands her ground, unapologetically telling him that it was an accident and that he should get over it. The entire school gasps—no one talks back to Charles Kingsley. This small act of defiance seals her fate. The very next day, Sophia finds a Red Card in her locker, marking her as the next target of F4’s relentless bullying. She is subjected to social exclusion, cruel pranks, and public humiliation, all orchestrated by Charles. However, unlike the other students who crumble under F4’s reign, Sophia refuses to back down. She walks through the halls with her head held high, earning admiration from a few students who secretly wish they had her courage. One of those students is Grayson Pierce, who watches her from afar with a mixture of curiosity and quiet amusement. Unlike his friends, Grayson does not actively participate in the bullying, though he does nothing to stop it either. As the episode closes, Sophia makes a bold declaration—she will not let F4 control her life. | |||||||

Despite this, Sophia refuses to show weakness. Her resilience only infuriates Charles more, as he is used to people either fearing him or worshiping him. Determined to break her spirit, Charles escalates his bullying. He corners her in the hallway, smirking as he taunts her in front of the entire school. “Why don’t you just quit? This school isn’t for people like you,” he sneers. But instead of cowering, Sophia meets his gaze head-on and fires back, “Then you’ll have to try harder because I’m not going anywhere.” This unexpected challenge rattles Charles. No one has ever dared to fight back against him, and for the first time, he finds himself thrown off balance. Meanwhile, Grayson continues to observe the growing tension between Charles and Sophia. Unlike the other F4 members, who find the situation amusing, Grayson is intrigued. He starts intervening in small ways—subtly warning Sophia about upcoming pranks or giving her silent reassurances. Though he doesn’t openly defy Charles, his quiet acts of kindness do not go unnoticed. One night, after an especially humiliating incident at a school event, Sophia breaks down in tears. For the first time, she feels the weight of everything crashing down on her. She questions whether fighting back is even worth it. But then she remembers her mother’s words—“Never let anyone decide your worth for you.” Renewed with determination, she vows to turn the tables on F4. The episode ends with a pivotal moment—Sophia publicly challenges Charles in front of the entire school. “If you think I’m scared of you, you’re wrong,” she says, her voice unwavering. Meanwhile, Sophia finds an unexpected ally in Grayson. He subtly offers his support, whether through a reassuring glance, a shared moment of silence, or a few words of encouragement. Sophia begins to see that not all of F4 are the same—while Charles may be her tormentor, Grayson is something else entirely. Charles escalates his pranks, pushing Sophia to the brink. Meanwhile, Grayson and Sophia grow closer. The episode begins with Sophia Asuncion trying to navigate the aftermath of receiving the Red Card from Charles Kingsley, the feared leader of F4. With the entire school now encouraged to make her life miserable, Sophia becomes a target for bullying in ways she never imagined. Students spill drinks on her, spread false rumors, and block her path in hallways, making even the simplest tasks feel unbearable. Despite the overwhelming hostility, Sophia refuses to break, holding her head high and pushing forward. Charles, however, is amused by her resilience. To him, Sophia is nothing more than a stubborn nuisance who refuses to acknowledge the social hierarchy of Atlanta International School. Determined to prove his dominance, he escalates his harassment, leading to a particularly humiliating moment in the cafeteria—one where he orchestrates a scene where she is doused in juice, drawing laughter from the crowd. However, Grayson Pierce, the quiet and enigmatic member of F4, watches the situation unfold with unease. While he has always been indifferent to Charles' methods, there is something about Sophia’s courage that stirs something within him. When Sophia later runs into him outside of school, their conversation is brief but impactful—Grayson, in his calm and reserved way, warns her that standing up to F4 comes at a cost. Meanwhile, tensions begin to emerge within F4 itself. Kade and Ashton, while loyal to Charles, begin questioning whether the bullying has gone too far. Ashton, in particular, expresses discomfort, reminding Charles that not everyone bends to their will. Charles dismisses their concerns, unwilling to admit that Sophia’s defiance has started to frustrate him in ways he can’t explain. The episode ends on a dramatic note as Sophia confronts Charles head-on, throwing back one of his cruel pranks in his face. The cafeteria falls silent, shocked at her boldness. He sees how Charles treats her, and though he knows there is something deeper behind Charles’ actions, he refuses to let Sophia suffer alone. In a moment of vulnerability, he opens up about his own struggles, revealing that his calm and composed exterior masks the pain of growing up in a family where love was conditional, where expectations weighed heavier than affection. Meanwhile, Kade and Ashton begin to observe the tension between their friends. Kade, who has always followed Charles' lead, starts to question his actions, wondering if their treatment of Sophia has gone too far. Ashton, the more carefree and playful member of F4, finds himself drawn to the unfolding drama, amused but also slightly worried about where it will lead. Season 1 (Kapamilya Channel)[]
Synopsis: At Atlanta International School, a prestigious institution where wealth and power dictate social status, Sophia Asuncion is an outlier—a hardworking, middle-class student struggling to balance her studies and part-time jobs. On her first day, she unintentionally offends Charles Kingsley, the leader of the notorious F4, a group of the four most influential and wealthiest heirs: Charles, Grayson Pierce, Kade Sullivan, and Ashton Rivera. These boys are treated like royalty by their classmates, despite their reputation for bullying those they deem inferior. As punishment for standing up to him, Charles issues Sophia a Red Card, marking her as the group’s next target for relentless bullying. What follows is a series of cruel pranks and humiliations, but unlike past victims, Sophia refuses to cower in fear. Her defiant attitude shocks F4, particularly Charles, who becomes obsessed with breaking her spirit. However, as Grayson begins to develop feelings for Sophia and openly supports her, the power dynamic within F4 begins to shift. Charles, despite his cruel intentions, starts feeling drawn to Sophia in ways he never expected. His growing protectiveness over her sparks jealousy, leading to tensions within the group and between Grayson and Charles, both of whom now see each other as rivals in love. As Sophia becomes more involved with F4, she is exposed to the ruthless world of the elite—deception, betrayals, and family expectations that threaten to crush her spirit. Meanwhile, Charles faces his own struggles as he battles with his controlling mother, who disapproves of his feelings for Sophia and attempts to force him into an arranged engagement with someone of his status. The Kapamilya Channel version condenses the story into a fast-paced narrative, focusing on the love triangle, the intense emotions between Sophia and Charles, and the growing conflict within F4. With fewer episodes, it moves quickly through major plot points, eliminating some subplots while maintaining the emotional impact of Sophia’s transformation from an ordinary girl to someone who captures the hearts of the most powerful boys in school. As the story unfolds, Sophia faces the ultimate decision—fight for love despite the odds, or walk away to protect herself from the heartbreak of being with someone who belongs to a world so different from her own.
