Diary of a Prosecutor (검사내전; Geomsanaejeon; lit. Prosecutor Civil War) is a 2019 South Korean television series starring Lee Sun Kyun, Jung Ryeo Won, Lee Sung Jae, Kim Kwang Gyu, Lee Sang Hee and Jeon Sung Woo. Based on the essay of the same name by prosecutor Kim Woong, it aired on JTBC's Mondays and Tuesdays at 21:30 (KST) timeslot from December 16, 2019 to February 11, 2020.

Synopsis[]

The stories of overworked prosecutors' daily lives in Seoul.

A drama depicting the mundane daily routine of overworked prosecutors staying up all night to tackle all the different cases handed over by the police.

Lee Sun Woong works at the Public Prosecutor's Office in his local district. On the outside, he looks a bit slow and like he has no ambitions in life, but his inner self is different from what he appears on the outside. Cha Myung Joo is an elite prosecutor, who was rising on the ladder of success at the Central District Prosecutor's Office before being sent to a branch office.[1]

  • Lee Sun Kyun as Lee Sun Woong
Narrator of the story, he is a passionate prosecutor of the Criminal Unit 2 who entered the prosecution ten years ago. He comes from a wealthy background and was acquainted with Myung Joo back in university, though the latter didn't like him being unaware of how privileged he was. Sun Woong is often in disagreement with Myung Joo soon after she becomes his colleague.
  • Jung Ryeo Won as Cha Myung Joo
Formely a successful prosecutor in Seoul, she has no choice but to move to Jinyoung and work at the District Prosecutors' Office until she can go back to the capital. She was Sun Woong's junior at university but she entered the prosecution one year earlier than him. She tends not to spend useless time on cases, she thus appears careless in the eyes of some of her colleagues.
  • Lee Sung Jae as Jo Min Ho
Chief of Jinyoung District Prosecutor's Office's Criminal Unit 2, he has been a prosecutor for 18 years. He cannot bear that his team keeps coming second in the office. Following Myung Joo's incident in Seoul, he succeeds in convincing her of joining his unit and hopes that her arrival will raise his team's results.

A working mother who has been a prosecutor for 4 years.

He has been a prosecutor for 14 years.

Myung Joo becomes his mentor soon after settling in Jinyoung, replacing Sun Woong. He enjoys going on dates but his workload usually prevents him from doing so. He doesn't have a real passion for his job but decided to become a prosecutor because the profession is well seen by others.

They believe he didn't perform exorcism after being paid, but the shaman himself disagrees. He's performed in at least 21 times. As the investigation carries on, Sun Woong does recognize the shaman's abilities. But something doesn’t seem right.

Two charges are filed against Kim Young Choon. Sun Woong and Myung Joo are asked to work together to dig in the cases and reach an agreement on the punishment for Kim Young Choon's doing.

    Criminal Department 2 comes across an unexpected tip about a hidden gambling den in the mountains. They decide to send someone to the gambling den undercover, but the only person whose face is unfamiliar to the target is Myung Joo. However, she does not know a thing about gambling. Sun Woong and the team must turn Myung Joo into a gambler overnight.

    The crackdown on the hidden gambling den is a success and hordes of people are arrested and interrogated by the prosecutors of Jinyoung. Among the people who were brought in from the gambling site is a man who seems to know Myung Joo quite well. Myung Joo decides that she must excuse herself from the case, but her next case is also one that reminds her of a hurtful past.

Sun Woong deals with uncomfortable conversations at work and is unsure of what he should do about his son.

As Mi Ran struggles to overcome the trauma of Jung Woo's rejection both offline and online, Jung Woo takes on his first solo case.

    Sun Woong's negligence brings shame and dishonor on Branch Chief Choi Jong Hoon and apparently the entire Prosecution. The battle between Sun Woong and Chief Choi begins with both their pride on the line. As Min Ho continues to take the flack for Sun Woong's insubordination, the 2K Motors trial gets handed over to Myung Joo right before Sun Woong demands a sentence.

The inspection team seems determined to dig up every error made by the Jinyoung prosecutors in both their work and personal lives. Meanwhile, Jung Woo sees the downtrodden team atmosphere as an opportunity and comes up with a plan for a secret date with Mi Ran.

    The former branch chief of Jinyoung, Mr. Kim In Ju, makes a brilliant comeback as the head of the special investigation team. To settle the bet, the pair take a trip to find the original owner of Sun Woong's accidental carpenter's ruler.

    Production[]

    Screenwriter Park Yeon-seon, who created the series, and director Lee Tae-gon previously worked together on the television series Hello, My Twenties! (2016) and its sequel Hello, My Twenties! 2 (2017).

    The first script reading took place in July 2019 at JTBC Building in Sangam-dong, Seoul, South Korea.

    Filming and promotion[]

    Filming began on August 24, 2019 and wrapped up on January 22, 2020. Scenes taking place in the fictional city of Jinyoung were filmed in Tongyeong, in South Gyeongsang Province, where more than 150 members of the cast and crew resided during the five months of filming.

    The series showcase took place at Imperial Palace Seoul on December 16, 2019, a few hours before the premiere, in presence of the six main actors.
