Encounter (남자친구; Namjachingu; lit. Boyfriend) is a 2018 South Korean television series starring Song Hye Kyo and Park Bo Gum. It aired on tvN's Wednesdays and Thursdays at 21:30 KST time slot from November 28, 2018 to January 24, 2019. It is one of the highest rated Korean dramas in cable television history airing on weekdays.

Internationally, the series streams via Viu and Viki, and has been sold to Now TV of Hong Kong, tvN Asia of Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia When Shown Telecast within 24 Hours Express From Korea, Starhub of Singapore, 8TV of Malaysia, Channel 7 of Thailand, FOX and iQIYI of Taiwan and ABS-CBN of the Philippines, as well as Mnet Japan which will air it in over 100 countries.

Synopsis[]

Cha Soo Hyun (Song Hye Kyo) is the daughter of a powerful, political family. She recently divorced her wealthy husband from an arranged marriage. Tired of living life guided by others, she decides to travel overseas. She meets Kim Jin Hyuk (Park Bo Gum), a free-spirited young soul on the way. Despite their differences, they are undeniably drawn to each other.

Will the two find true love amongst their differences?[1]

    This drama airs on a cable channel/pay TV which normally has a relatively smaller audience compared to free-to-air TV/public broadcasters (KBS, SBS, MBC and EBS).

    • In Indonesia, the series aired on Trans TV since January 7–26, 2019. Encounter the first K-drama ever, airing in Indonesia while still on going in South Korea.
    • In the Philippines, the series aired on ABS-CBN on August 5-September 27, 2019 during The First and True Home of Asianovelas programming block, replacing Pinoy Big Brother: Otso. on December 30, 2019, the series reaired on Asianovela Channel.
    • In Chile, the series aired on ETC on September 9, 2019 under the title Encuentro, in original Korean audio with Spanish subtitles. ETC is the only TV network in Chile that airs K-dramas.

    Production[]

    The first script reading was held on August 23, 2018 in Sangnam Neighborhood, Seoul, South Korea. Principal photography began in September 2018, with part of the filming taking place in Cuba.

    Trivia[]

    • This drama took over the timeslot previously occupied by "Hundred Million Stars From the Sky" and was followed by "Touch Your Heart" on February 6, 2019.
    • Episode 9 and 10 did not air on December 26, 2018 and December 27, 2018, respectively because of Christmas Holidays. They were rescheduled to air on January 2, 2019 and January 3, 2019. Instead, a rerun of Episode 7 and 8 aired on December 26, 2018, and the tvN drama special "tvN Drama Stage: Jin Choo-Ha Returns" on December 27, 2018.
