The beginnings of the network can be traced back to Loreto F. de Hemedes Incorporated through DZBB.[1] It started its radio broadcast on March 1, 1950. It later ventured into television around 1960s where Stewart, the owner, started RBS TV Channel 7. The programming was composed of foreign programs before the introduction of local programs. In the same decade, the firm, Loreto F. de Hemedes, Inc., was renamed to Republic Broadcasting System, Inc. (RBS) [2][3]
In the 1970s, President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law and restricted freedom of the press. Due to this, Stewart was forced to give up majority of his control on RBC to triumvirate composed of Gilberto Duavit Sr., Menardo Jimenez, and Felipe Gozon. The station was then named to GMA Radio Television Arts, Greater Manila Area, while the company retained its original name. [3][4][5]
The network later expanded its reach internationally and established different companies.
