Background[]
The controversy surrounding "Sa Paraan na Kasama Kita" revolves around its significant deviation from the original Wattpad novel True Love Waits by Rocky Telodoreo. In the original story, readers were emotionally invested in a tragic narrative where the female lead was expected to die from a terminal illness. This outcome resonated with many because it portrayed love's endurance, even in the face of inevitable loss. The novel’s heartbreaking yet cathartic conclusion captured the raw emotion of grief and the beauty of a love that lasts beyond death.
However, the film adaptation stirred controversy by changing this key plot point. Instead of the protagonist dying, she survives due to a miraculous event, altering the tone of the story entirely. The decision to introduce a more hopeful, almost supernatural twist, where a mysterious man intervenes to save her, upset some fans of the original. Many felt that the emotional depth and realism of the Wattpad novel were compromised, as the original ending gave readers a sense of closure in accepting fate.
For those who loved the book, the tragic ending was powerful because it felt real—it reflected the pain of losing someone, and how love, though enduring, doesn’t always conquer death. By making the lead character survive in the movie, the emotional weight of the story’s original message shifted. Some felt that this more optimistic take weakened the intensity of the story’s core themes of loss and acceptance.
On the other hand, supporters of the film’s changes argue that the adaptation offers a new perspective on hope and survival. By giving the characters a second chance, the film presents love not as something that ends in tragedy but as something capable of overcoming all odds, including death. For them, the shift from sorrow to hope adds depth and inspiration, exploring the idea that miracles can change even the most certain outcomes. Ultimately, the controversy is rooted in whether the adaptation’s deviation from the original plot enriches or detracts from the story’s emotional impact. While some prefer the novel's more grounded and tragic resolution, others appreciate the film’s hopeful, reimagined conclusion.

Lluvia's Character Disease[]
Mimicking the Symptoms[]
Dy would need to accurately portray the chronic pain, fatigue, and physical limitations that come with these conditions. Practicing subtle expressions of discomfort, changes in posture, and moments of physical exhaustion would be key. Dy may research or consult with medical professionals to understand how treatments like dialysis (for ESRD) or medications for SLE and Fibromyalgia affect a person's body and energy levels.
She might simulate the effects of these treatments, such as fatigue after a dialysis session or joint pain during flare-ups. Since acting involves long hours on set, Dy might need to pace herself to avoid overexertion and convey the character’s physical challenges without appearing exaggerated. Chronic illness often comes with emotional burdens, such as frustration, anxiety, or feelings of inadequacy. Dy would need to channel these emotions into her performance to authentically represent Lluvia’s inner world. Despite her illnesses, Lluvia is a resilient character. Dy would balance portraying vulnerability with strength, showing how Lluvia navigates her health challenges while maintaining her love and commitment to Trever. The dynamic between Lluvia and Trever, her family, and her friends would require Dy to show the strain her illness places on relationships, as well as the love and support that sustain her.
Subtlety in Dialogue[]
Dy would focus on delivering lines with emotional nuance, particularly in scenes where Lluvia discusses her condition or struggles with its impact on her life. Dy would prepare for emotionally intense scenes, such as moments of despair, hope, or when Lluvia confronts her limitations, ensuring they resonate deeply with the audience. Dy might meet with individuals living with SLE, Fibromyalgia, and ESRD to understand their experiences, gaining insights into their daily lives, coping mechanisms, and emotional resilience.
Medical Knowledge[]
Learning medical jargon and procedures related to these conditions (e.g., dialysis routines, medication side effects) would help her add authenticity to her portrayal.
Challenge-Career Interviewed[]
Rafael:[]
Trever is a character torn between love, family expectations, and his personal struggles, requiring Rafael to show a wide range of emotions, from vulnerability to resilience. He needed to balance Trever’s role as a supportive husband and his own frustrations stemming from family disapproval and life’s hardships. The final sea reunion was an especially poignant moment, requiring Rafael to embody Trever's feelings of hope, regret, and unconditional love after years of separation. Trever’s strained relationship with his father, Victorino, and his protective instincts over his sister Alexandria added layers of complexity to his portrayal.
What Rafael might have said in an interview:
- “Trever’s journey is one of resilience and growth. He’s a man who faces enormous pressure from all sides but holds on to love as his anchor. Playing him was emotionally draining but rewarding because of how real and relatable his story feels. The sea reunion scene, in particular, was unforgettable—it felt like everything led to that moment.”
Apple Dy:[]
Apple had to capture the physical and emotional toll of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Fibromyalgia, and End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). This included moments of physical weakness, emotional vulnerability, and Lluvia’s courage in facing these conditions. Lluvia is a resilient woman who fights for love while grappling with her health and familial conflicts. Apple needed to show both her fragility during moments of pain and her strength when standing up for her love with Trever. The reconciliation scene required Apple to express years of longing and unresolved emotions, making it one of the film’s most emotionally charged moments.
What Apple Dy might have said in an interview:
- “Lluvia’s story was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Playing someone who battles so much but chooses love and hope was challenging but also deeply fulfilling. I did a lot of research to understand her illnesses, but I also focused on her emotional journey—how love gave her the strength to face life’s toughest battles. The sea reunion scene was magical. It reminded me of the beauty of second chances.”
